GSIG Project 2018-2019
|
In Fall of 2018, BRLA was notified that the Kelly Memorial Food Pantry received a donation of 12,000+ books to giveaway to those who visited the pantry. They requested assistance on sorting the donation so they could easily refresh the shelves.
BRLA began by assisting in purchasing additional shelves from the UTEP Surplus auction. Two large metal bookcases were found and transported to the pantry. The Graduate Students Interest Group members joined the chair, Joy Urbina to review how to organize the work, reconfigure the shelves and setup a system that could be followed by other pantry volunteers. Joy, along with Marissa Testerman, Joseph Testerman, Angela Cardiel, and Virginia De La Fuente worked to review the various boxes and shelves over several weekends. In the photos it shows the final organization system developed. These are experiences that our graduate students need aside from paid internships or volunteer work. One of the goals of the GSIG is to have students graduate with experience more than just their end of course practicum. If you have ideas, suggestions or one-time projects for our graduated students, please contact the GSIG Chair, Joy Urbina at [email protected]. |
